He tends to dress very richly, often in waistcoats and ornate coats in bright colors. He wears four sets of gold hoop earrings, two near the tips of his ears and two on the lobes. He also possesses a distinctive set of tattoos that always appear bright as if freshly inked: trailing vines in crimson, azure, green, and gold that extend from the backs of his hands to his entire forearm, as well as blue eyes on his palms.

Felix's voice is rather high, often described as light and breathless. His diction is very cultured. He often speaks with his hands, especially when he's excited, but otherwise how he carries himself depends on his mood. He likes to keep clear but avoids heavy perfumes or fragrances.

SKILLS

Can understand and read a few languages but can't speak them all

Most “courtly” skills like knowing how to conduct himself with nobility (assuming he bothers) and dancing

Proficient in horse riding

Good at drawing and penmanship

Exceedingly good at charming at manipulating people

Trained prostitute

ABILITIES

ARCANE MAGIC -
* Counterspelling - Most spellcasting can be blocked or redirected assuming Felix can see the person casting and understands what they’re doing. He can also break spells cast on himself given enough time.
* Dispelling - Similar to counterspelling, he can disperse lingering effects of magic in an area or on an object. This version requires far more time and extended use of ritual.
* Telepathy - He can speak mind to mind to anyone within sight, though Felix finds this nearly impossible with people who have no skill in magic themselves.
* Lock spells - Can seal door, chests, boxes, or basically anything that can open and close
* Dream magic (oneiromancy) - Felix has various skills in this subset of magic. First, he can enter a dream-construct of his own creation to manipulate various modes of dreaming. Some of these, which can give him visions of the past, present (called true-dreaming), and future, intersect slightly with fortune magic. He can also draw other people into this construct. Secondly, he can access a kind of stable shared ancestral dream-construct called the Khloidanikos, in which he can meet with other dream-walkers. Dream-walking directly to other people is something he’s only tried once or twice. Finally, he can use this to manipulate dreaming in other people, which he commonly uses to ward off nightmares
* Wards - .Arguably his specialty, these can have any number of effects and can be placed on people or structures. For most wards, he uses a curious blend of alchemy with arcane (or sometimes wild) magic to power them.

ALCHEMY - Felix identifies as a Cabaline, which in Krimnos was a sub-school of wizards that refer to themselves as materialists. Not only does he prefer to channel his magic through rings, but the magic-infused tattoos on his arms further augment his power

ELEMENTAL MAGIC - While he knows a few basic techniques with fire, lightning, water, and wind, his true talent lies in light magic. Felix can summon witchlights, floating motes of light that he can manipulate the shape, color, number and intensity of at will. They require little to no energy to maintain. He can send them after other people, even if he cannot see them. The lights have no substance and emit no heat unless he wants them to, in which case he can amplify it to devastating degrees. The effect can resemble lightning, though it’s more precise.

FORTUNE MAGIC - Outside of the intersection with dream-magic, his skill is limited to a few tricks taught to him by Mavortian. Largely this involves using cards as a focus to ask questions and is somewhat non-specific.

FORBIDDEN MAGIC - Thanks to his Master, Felix knows a terrifying amount of blood magic, charms, curses, binding rituals, and necromancy that he will likely never cast again (unless he finds a sufficient loophole). The one exception is necromancy, and only to be able to see and communicate with ghosts, as well as any ritual he conducts to lay to rest any sort of undead.

PERSONALITY

STUBBORN - In general, Felix has a stubborn streak a mile wide and compulsively defies authority in any form. Despite the fact that it might have saved him a lot of grief, he admits to fighting back against Malkar when he was younger, and he continues this behavior by being directly impertinent to the Lord Protector as often as possible. In addition he will almost never ask for help, in part because of his private nature and in part because the past has taught him to never show weakness to others. When he does something wrong, it is even more rare that he will apologize.

TEMPERAMENTAL - Felix is a mercurial creature, capable of extreme shifts in demeanor. Sometimes he can be happy, bright, warm, and charming. However, he has an intense temper that surfaces when he feels threatened for any reason, no matter how small. He often lashes out verbally, at best, but at worst leads to physical violence including literal rage blackouts. When troubled, he sinks into angry or depressive moods that can last for very long periods. (Note: It’s been suggested he’s meant to code as manic-depressive, but I’ve become a fan of the personal theory that he may have borderline personality disorder, as it fits a number of earmarks of his personality beyond even this one)

MANIPULATIVE - On one side of the coin, Felix is incredibly charming. He knows how to entertain and captivate as well as he can exercise diplomacy. Often this means seduction. On the other side of the coin, he has a rapier wit that knows how to cut down his enemies. All of these things rely on his ability to read people to know either how to appeal to them or to know exactly what words will hurt them the most. All of these can include flirtation, as he uses his sexuality as both a tool and a weapon depending on the situation.

SELF-LOATHING - Felix tends to hate anything that reminds him of his childhood and fiercely maintains the mannerisms Malkar beat into him. Even when some of it is known, he often becomes upset, lashing out in defense of anything to do with his past. Perhaps worse, he hates himself for his own actions, such as his repeated cruelty towards others, but also for his desire for his half-brother. He spends large amounts of time dwelling on such things. This leads to frequent self-destructive and sometimes outright suicidal behaviors - ranging from alcohol abuse, to putting himself in risky situations, to a few actual attempts on his own life. He outright states at end of the series that he thinks of himself as a monster, but one that can learn to do better.

SELF-CENTERED - Felix has difficulty recognizing the problems of others through the morass of this own issues. This self-centered aspect of his nature is what leads to some of his worst betrayals of those he cares about most, all because he tends to think of his own needs first. His primary desire in general is to have everyone he meets love him – whether it is through lust, admiration, or respect. Often this is superficial. Felix’s vanity is somewhat legendary. Just like his mannerisms, the clothes he wears perform the double duty of attention-seeking and serving as a kind of armor that prevents most people from looking past the surface. He is an unashamed clotheshorse that prefers bright colors and ostentatious fabrics that catch the eye.

INTELLECTUALLY CURIOUS - Felix has a deep academic curiosity, and is relentless to the point of obsession when solving any riddle, especially any to do with magical theory. He also enjoys this quality in others and will take great pains to nurture any attempt to learn or question, which in part is what makes him a surprisingly good teacher. This open-minded nature extends to his magic in important ways. Unlike many wizards, Felix doesn’t have a great impulse for power (already having quite a bit), and rather than seeing magic as a force to be controlled, he develops an attitude of openness and cooperation with that power which ends up being a major impact in his repair of the Virtu and his defeat of Malkar. He also loves learning for its own sake, having interests in botany, history, and philosophy, some of which he had to pursue in spite the will of his Master.

GUARDED - A lifetime of abandonment and abuse has made Felix incredibly wary of human connection. He is afraid to let people too close, afraid to admit that he loves anyone for fear of losing them, and afraid that people knowing the real him will make them leave. He instinctively distrusts kindness from strangers and is actually embarrassed by positive attention garnered on him for anything he actually deserves. The real Felix, without his panoply of defense mechanisms, is actually fairly shy.

EMPATHETIC - While it doesn’t always surface under his myriad other personality flaws, deep down Felix is capable of extraordinary kindness, often towards other people who are similarly disadvantaged or downtrodden. This is especially notable in the ways he goes out his way to help suffering ghosts pass on.

PRINCIPLED - While Felix may be morally grey and prone to breaking or manipulating rules, he often does so in pursuit of a greater good. He goes back to fix the Virtu despite his potential to be executed, uses forbidden magic to do so, and risks his life to save a foreign city all because it is simply the right thing to do.

KEY EVENTS IN GAME HISTORY

ORIGIN AND CHILDHOOD (cw: mention of child abuse, children in sexual situation) - His mother was a woodland elf who was the daughter of a healer in a conclave of elves that lived somewhere on the Wavecrest Isles. Her labor coincides with the start of the Long Night, during which a creature of the outer realm tricks it’s way into her chamber and makes brief contact with her before being killed. Felix is born whole but slightly altered, and members of the conclave fear the two are cursed. What is certain, is that Felix has a slightly stronger connection to the outer realm as a result. Methony runs away to Krimnos and falls into prostitution and Felix is later sold (probably unwillingly) by his mother to a man who trains packs of kids to be thieves. He is a complete monster that tortures and beats them to maintain discipline. The worst is arguably done by half drowning them. Felix isn't a very good thief but he is pretty, so he gets sold to a brothel instead. He is later bought by a client - an elven vampir blood-wizard named Malkar who takes him outside the city and trains him in magic and how to pass in high society. Malkar introduces him to the Queen of Krimnos and her court where he is quickly given a title and the job of helping to maintain and strengthen the wards protecting the city, due in part to his natural talent and high level of power.

THINGS DESTROYED - Malkar, through a third party/another protege, later outs Felix's past as a prostitute. Quickly shunned by the court he runs back to the protection of his Master, who uses him as a kind of conduit to shatter or severely warp the wards. He drags Felix out of the city but is caught by pursuing knights and blames the events solely on Felix, who has been driven mad by the ritual. For good measure, Malkar also compels him magically to not tell anyone what he'd done. Not sure of what he'd done and unable to ask him, they lock him up in the dungeons where Malkar's protege "questions" him frequently (aka tortures). The nature of the ritual he'd been subjected to also seems to have pushed him closer to the shadow realm, as he can also see ghosts. Of which there are many in the dungeons. He starts dream-walking to escape his own madness and comes across a clue to his past and the elven healers that might be able to help him. Later, a friend from the court, Thaddeus, who'd been studying abroad in Einjar returns and recognizes the magic on Felix.

FATEFUL MEETINGS - Thaddeus removes the compulsion and helps restore his status, but Malkar uses the opportunity to dream-walk to Felix and cause him to set the battlements on fire. They decide to move Felix out of the city for everyone's safety while they try to get things under control. At an inn he meets his half brother who turns out to be a notorious assassin. The pair decide to escape and flee south to Felix's birthplace, along with three other people (Gideon, a mage that had deserted from Atrómitos, Mavortian, a fortune wizard, and his half-brother Bernard) who they ended up being separated from while fleeing militia.

MISTAKES CORRECTED, MISTAKES MADE -
The two return to Krimnos, rescue the other three men on the way, and fix the wards upon his return, partially with Mavortian’s help with fortune magic. Malkar sends Felix a missive asking to meet. Knowing it to be a trap but not wanting to confront his Master, Felix asks his brother to kill the vampir for him, knowing of his past as an assassin. When he refuses, Felix forces him to do it via a charm, which results in his capture. Felix then goes to Atrómitos with Mavortian to rescue him and kills Malkar.

EXILE AND DEATH
A couple of years later, Felix grows particularly obsessed with the idea of Malkar returning to life, possibly fueled by the dragon's madness. Increasingly temperamental, he drives off his lover (Gideon) whom a spy from Atrómitos murders and tries to frame Felix for. Felix finds out and forces the man to literally walk off a cliff. Not taking kindly to this use of magic but due to mitigating circumstances, they exile him (and his brother) instead. Felix heads to Thalassa for lack of options and begins teaching magic for a short time there. Rumors of strange plagues spreading across the bay reach him, though only Felix recognizes it as the effects of magic. He leaves the city to find the source, finding on the battlefield a strange necromantic device that was feeding upon the life energy in the area. Knowing that when the device's ritual finished it could wipe out the better part of Thalassa in one fell swoop, he feeds the device straight dark magic. Consuming it's antithesis, the device explodes, taking him with it.

OPT OUT

Mod Note, do not remove:
Please note that if any player chooses to opt-out of interacting with another player or their characters,
they must also inform the mod team to avoid random pairing for plots.
<b>Player Name:</b>

Iskaulit additions

Magic Lounge & Workrooms

Located adjacent to the Iskaulit library, the door opens onto a large but cozy study room with a large picture window looking out to the stars. The space somehow bridges the gap between industrial and baroque in style. Along one wall are a couple wooden bookcases containing books on various magical subjects, while on the other is a large wooden cupboard with metal-fronted cabinet doors that contains an assortment of basic foci and components needed for spell-casting ranging. Characters are free to re-stock and add to the collection as needed. Flanking the cabinet and window are four over-stuffed chairs of varying designs. Coat hooks and wooden rack for staves are available just inside the door, and a large iron-framed wall mirror is positioned near the window. Most of the lighting is provided by metal wall-sconces that hold candles, though there is a switch that turns on a brighter ceiling-light if more illumination is required. The floors are covered with rich but worn patterned rugs to soften the look.

To the right, a door open up into a door-lined hall. Each door opens up into a small open workroom. They are mostly empty but customizable to the needs of the user. These rooms are also furnished with floor rugs and a basic wooden desk and chair, though the third workroom, at the end of the hall, is slightly larger and contains a cabinet and set of heavy counters, with a small sink, set up to serve as a basic lab for potions or alchemy.

All of the workrooms have been warded by Felix to be contain the energy from any spell-casting gone awry, and protects the interior from nearly any sort of damage, both mundane and magical.

If you have any questions about the wards or would like to plan something specific to add to the space, don't hesitate to contact me via plurk or PM.
( Images under the cut )

comments

Wards

Felix has added protective wards to his former and current ships on the fleet - the Starstruck and the Goldstone. The general effect of both is to protect the ships from limited elemental and physical damage both inside and out. This means that even without shields, the ship in question can absorb the damage of one or two hits from the outside. Internally, components are a little harder to break and are difficult to damage with things such as fire, electricity, water, etc. This also means that any fires that happen to start on the ship due to damage will not spread.

On the Goldstone, this effect is slightly stronger and include one major effect. The wards protect people inside the ship from being attacked by any other being by instantly stunning the attacker for a few seconds. If nothing is done, the target can move again, but will be stunned again if they make a move to attack. In order to be considered under the protection of the wards, a person must both be inside the walls of the ship and be carrying one of the warding stones on their person.

At the time the wards were installed the maximum capacity of the ship was twelve and thus there are twelve warding stones. Stones can be set into jewelry or carried in a pocket as the user desires.

Stone submission form:
Please respond to the following comment form with your character info and what you'd like your stone to look like/how you would like your stone set (if at all). Please keep in mind that the stones are to be around the size of a quarter and are to be made with polished stones of sufficient hardness and no greater than semi-precious in value. Acceptable stone shapes are cabochon, sphere, oval, and bead. Once the appearance of all stones are set, they cannot be changed.

CHARACTER NAME | <user name=JOURNAL NAME>
Stone type: [onyx, quartz, jasper, etc...]
Stone shape: [cabochon, sphere, oval, or bead]
Stone setting: [If desired. Please specify]</center>

comments

He flirts with most people and doesn't always mean it
Fighting with this character: He's a squishy wizard. Minor stuff is fine (a single punch or slap), but otherwise please consult first
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Minor injuries are always okay with me. Major stuff requires prior consent and plotting.
Killing this character: Not unless it's been planned. Generally I prefer to avoid it.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Go right ahead!

Warnings:

While it's unlikely to come up regularly, since Felix tends to be incredibly secretive about certain subjects, certain elements of his canon history include any one of the following topics: child abuse, death of children, children in sexual situations, murder, insanity, torture, and rape. If you'd rather not have Felix tag your character, or if there is a particular subject you'd like to ask me to avoid, just in case, please let me know in the comments below.

comments

Information post

Name: Felix Harrowgate
Gender: Male
Age: 31
Birthday: December 29th ((Date is Word of God, but not actually known to the character))
Height: 6'2"
Weight: thin, idk.
Eyes: Left eye is yellow, right eye is a pale blue
Hair: Red ((with white streaks at his left temple and to the right of his forehead. These are mentioned a total of three times in canon and so are easy to forget))
Other distinguishing features: Felix is in possession of a very distinctive set of tattoos which mark him as a wizard of the Cabaline school. The tattoos resemble trailing vines in garish crimson, azure, green, and gold that start at the knuckles and go all the way up the forearms. On his palm is large blue eye. Since they are made with magic, they never fade and remain as bright as if they were newly inked. His back is also an ugly mess of scars that are a result of being repeatedly beaten with a nun's scourge by his Keeper. The only reason he has any mobility is because Malkar had the wounds treated (painfully). Almost no one has seen these scars, and the only person he has ever told the truth about them is his brother. He has told previous lovers they were the result of a plague.
Wardrobe: Felix always wears a four sets of gold hoop ears, two at the bottom of the ear, and two at the top. His clothes are very bright, very fancy, and generally vaguely 18th century. For more detail see this post
Sexuality: Homosexual ((In his world the term is molly in the vulgar Marathine, and ganumedes in Kekropian))
Voice: Has a "light, breathless voice". Speaks very precisely, in a manner similar to that of 1940's era Hollywood. Under stress he sometimes slips and reverts to his childhood speech pattern, which is more of a deep southern drawl, cursing included.
Handwriting: Like this
Room: 626, currently shared with Ashura
Fandom: The Doctrine of Labyrinths series
Canon point: Shortly after his exile following the events of The Mirador
Loss: The Sibylline
Date of Arrival in Paradisa: November 13th, 2010

comments

Doctrine of Labyrinths Magic

"The most important thing about magic is the metaphors we use to understand it, and a metaphor that is wrong is a metaphor that doesn't work. No wizard who successfully performs any piece of magic can possibly be using a wrong metaphor. There are bad metaphors, dangerous metaphors, destructive metaphors -- but no wrong metaphors. Thaumaturgical theory, in the broadest sense, is about manipulating our metaphors and, ideally, making sure that the metaphors we use are good ones."

--Felix (Corambis pg.302)
( cut for tl;dr )

comments

Chimera

The name Felix settled on for this organization is something of an oddity. Privately it is a tribute to his home, whose magical seat of government primarily held court in an area called the Hall of Chimeras, so named for the images on it's mosaic floor. Publicly the name is symbolic for the three different areas to which they are dedicated.

comments
